Nicaragua Shipments

What are they?

Twice a year, in May and October, the New Jersey based organization  PeaceWorks sponsors a shipment of humanitarian aid to Nicaragua.   Organizations and individuals from around the Northeast bring donations of clothes, bicycles, office equipment, school supplies, tools, etc. to United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, where PeaceWorks volunteers load it onto a 45 foot container. At the end of the day, the container is hauled to Port Newark and placed on a ship bound for Nicaragua.

PeaceWorks has been running aid shipments since 1987. For most of that time Christ Church has been an active participant. We collect and pack donations from the Christ Church community and friends the morning of the shipment day and take them down to Plainfield.

Details on the upcoming shipment, October 13, 2007.
(Suggestion: Print the next page and show your friends.)

Who gets our aid and what donations do they accept?

All the donations go to grassroots organizations run by Nicaraguans striving to fight poverty and its effects. We support mainly the following organizations:
  • Inhijambia: Inhijambia helps girls living as street children to establish a new life by providing housing, job training, and education. Inhijambia needs summer clothing and shoes for the girls; baby items; kitchen, sewing and beauty shop supplies; school and office supplies, including computers.
  • Christ Church supports Inhijambia also through the Board of World Fellowship and through mission trips.
  • MASINFA (Masaya Sin Frontieres):  MASINFA is a large NGO based in Masaya, Nicaragua, that assists communities with social and infrastructure development such as housing, water purification, electrification, and job training, and that provides disaster relief. They accept donations of clothing, medical supplies, bicycles, sports and school supplies, tools, and computer equipment, which they distribute to community centers, hospitals, schools, etc.
  • Guarderia Infantil: This is a childrens' feeding and pre-school care center. They need children's clothing, school supplies, and toys.
