What Christ Church Means to Me

By John Ross
November, 2002

I
must admit I was a little surprised when I was approached by Chuck and Carey to speak to you today. I am almost sure that I am not the largest financial contributor to the church, and to be honest I think I am still a little short on last year's pledge. Then I thought they must have asked me to speak to that large demographic here at Christ Church, the thirty-something single crowd. No, I don't think that is it either.

Recently my mom was talking to me about being thirty-something and single, and I quickly tried to change the subject by bringing up the rapid progress that has been made on the new Barnwell hall. I told her it was actually a lucky thing that I was not getting married any time soon because the church grounds are under construction, and don't look as beautiful as they normally do. There was a long pause at the other end, and then my mothers sweet voice said: "Honey, maybe that is why you are not married yet, you see the bride gets to decide where the ceremony is. It really is her day after all. You just have to show up."

I guess I already knew that, but I just assumed that the future Mrs. Ross wouldn't want to get married anywhere else other then here. Who wouldn't want to get married in this spectacular setting with Chuck officiating, and Wayne providing the music. It just seemed so natural. I mean I was confirmed right in this very spot in that 'ice cold' baptismal pool. I watched all my older brothers and sisters get dunked, and I knew I wanted to get dunked too. We all participated in youth group, and my mom was even the leader once or twice.

My sister Susan was married here and I met my first real girlfriend in youth group. I saw the face God right then and there, and I became a regular at service and all youth group meetings. I even joined the Board of Christian Ed.. I never, ever missed a youth retreat. I mean who wouldn't want to go skiing in Vermont with your girlfriend, and have Joe Gilmore and Alan Tinker as your chaperones? Hey, anyway you can get them in the pews, right Chuck!

Of course It hasn't been all fun and happy memories. I have experienced some tragedies as well, and the Christ Church community has helped me through each, and every one. My grandmother's memorial service was held in this sanctuary and my nephew James is buried in the memorial garden.

Now I think I know why Chuck & Carey approached my to speak to you this morning, and I hope I don't hear any check books slamming shut, but basically; Christ Church made me the person I am today. Everything I know about Love, faith, hope, forgiveness, community - and all of Christ's teaching - I learned in this place.

I truly believe that there is no other faith community is this town, state or even maybe the country as dedicated to social justice; and after all that is the main message of Jesus' teachings, than Christ Church. And we have a responsibility, all of us, even broke John Ross to support this church financially so it can fulfill its unique, and truly "holy" mission. Thank you. I thank all of you. Those of you who have taught me how to be a good Christian and those of you who I have taught. Peace be with all of you.
